Overview
A Psalm in Your Heart: The Psalms of Ascent, Psalms 120–134
by George O. Wood
The Psalms of Ascent are the 15 psalms that were quoted or sung by the Israelites when
they ascended from the lowest point on earth (Jericho and the Dead Sea) to the temple for the
three Jewish festivals. It’s a long, hard walk uphill from 1,200 feet below sea level to
2,400 feet above. This book, an excerpt from George O. Wood’s
A Psalm in Your Heart, was written when he went
through a season of extreme trial and depression. As Dr. Wood worked through the psalms, he
realized that he was higher on the climb than when he had been deep in the valley. Of the
devotions for these 15 Psalms of Ascent, he writes, “I trust these devotionals on the
Psalms of Ascent will give you courage in your own climb. Our destination is God’s
eternal dwelling. Let the mediations of the Psalmist as he or she journeyed upward to the
ancient temple in Jerusalem strengthen your own faith in your ascent to the Zion above.”
